Local SEO: how businesses get found nearby

How local search results are put together, what you can influence, and the order to work in if you rely on customers in a defined area.

Local results are a separate competition

For searches with local intent, the map results and the ordinary results are assembled differently. Your Google Business Profile drives one; your website drives the other.

Both are worth having, and they need different work. A strong website will not by itself put you on the map, and a complete profile will not by itself rank your service pages.

Get the profile right before anything else

Choose the most accurate primary category, list your services, add real photographs, keep opening hours current, and make sure the business name, address and phone number match what appears on your website exactly.

Inconsistency between those details across the web is one of the more common reasons a legitimate local business underperforms.

Give the areas you serve real pages

If you genuinely work across several towns, a page per area can help — but only if each one says something true and specific about working there.

Duplicating one page and swapping the place name is both obvious to search engines and useless to the reader. If you cannot write something genuine about an area, leave it out.

Reviews: ask, never buy

Genuine reviews influence local visibility and, more importantly, whether someone picks you from three options on a map.

Ask customers directly after you have finished a job, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to what people write. Never buy reviews or write them yourself; it is against the rules and it is usually visible to anyone reading carefully.

Measure enquiries, not rankings

Local rankings vary by the searcher's exact location, so a position check is less meaningful than it looks.

Track calls, direction requests and form submissions instead. Those are the numbers that tell you whether the work is producing customers.
